NHL 11: season 2010-2011
The National Hockey League, often abbreviated to the NHL, is a not-for-profit unincorporated association which operates a major professional ice hockey league of 30 franchised clubs, of which 24 are located in the United States and 6 in Canada.
NHL was organized in 1917 in Montreal (Quebec, Canada) after the suspension of operations of its predecessor organization, the National Hockey Association, which had been founded in 1909. HNL started with 4 teams and, through a series of expansions, relocations, and contractions, the league is now composed of 30 franchises. After a "lockout" that led to the cancellation of the entire 2004–2005 season, the league resumed play under a new collective bargaining agreement that included a salary cap.
The Stanley Cup, the oldest professional sports trophy in North America, is awarded annually to the league playoff champion at the end of each season. The Stanley Cup is surrounded by numerous traditions and legends, the oldest of which is the celebratory drinking of champagne out of the cup by the winning team.
There are actually three Stanley Cups: the original bowl, the authenticated Cup, and the replica at the Hall of Fame. The original bowl, purchased by Lord Stanley and physically awarded to the champion for the first 71 years of competition, is currently displayed at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto, Ontario.
